Science and math instruction dive deep into subject areas, striving toward higher order thinking skills. Students keep a science/math notebook for reference and documentation of work. Rooted Math uses storytelling with our forest kids, Fern and Arrow and natural elements to teach K/1 math concepts. Both Nature School and Rooted Math follow weekly themes along with project-based work. Our 5–7-year-old students gain practice in following directions, dissecting and matching elements of nature, guided project work and increasing their nature vocabulary. Our Rooted Mindset curriculum is also included in this class. K/1 Nature School includes a guide for meaningful homework in math, science and practical life making it easy for parents to plan, document and enrich each week’s lessons. A curated list of book suggestions (most available at the library) is provided for each study subject.
Many of our K/1 students stay for extended time, taking advantage of our Rooted Projects.
