Rooted Literature invites students to explore the natural world through the lens of story. We select nature-based literature that often aligns with current Nature School themes, helping children make meaningful connections between books and the environment around them. Students engage with literary elements and participate in STEAM challenges inspired by the stories. Kids build skills in collaborative storytelling and narration.
From tall tales and classic literature to folklore, fairy tales, fantasy, realistic fiction, biography and poetry, this class offers a rich variety of genres. Using picture books, dramatic play, retellings, and opportunities to create original stories, Rooted Literature fosters both a love of reading and a deeper connection to nature.

Rooted Math Workshop offers students the chance to strengthen their math skills in our engaging outdoor classroom. Each student follows an individualized plan with targeted goals and instruction tailored to their current level—whether that’s number recognition, addition and subtraction strategies, or mastering multiplication tables.
Goals are reviewed and updated every four weeks to track progress and support continued growth. Roots and Wings teachers provide regular monitoring, assessment, and guidance to help each student build confidence and competence in math. We’re excited to kick off another great semester of Build Class!
Now in its third year, Build continues to be one of our most popular and engaging classes. Build blendscreativity, challenge, collaborative play, problem solving, math language, and literacy. We’ll be bringing back some tried-and-true favorite projects—and introducing fresh new builds like puppet theaters and parking garages!
We’ll build with materials like straws, cups, cork, cardboard, blocks, rocks, foil, sticks, clothespins, newspapers, Magnatiles and just about anything else we can find!
Build Class sparks curiosity and fosters creativity while developing STEM skills through hands-on construction, problem-solving, and collaborative play. It’s a class full of invention, imagination, and joyful learning. It’s sure to capture the imaginations of students who love to tinker, invent, and create.

Get ready to travel back in time as we explore how people on the North American continent have built homes throughout history! In this hands-on project class, we’ll discover how humans have always used the materials around them—like clay, stone, wood, and grass—to build shelters that fit their environment.
Each week, we’ll dive into a different time or culture—like cliff dwellings of the Pueblo people, Native American teepees and longhouses, and cozy pioneer cabins. We'll build mini models and learn how things like weather, land, and available resources shaped how people lived.
We’ll finish our 8 week study with a “Homes Through Time,” timeline and structure sharing where students will display their work.

Students will work together to plan, design, and build a mock city! From sketching maps and designing neighborhoods to constructing buildings and deciding on essential services like parks, schools, and fire stations, students will explore the foundations of community life.
Older students will learn about the infrastructure of a city like water supply, the electrical grid and waste management. Younger students will enjoy map making, exploring types of transportation, creatively imagining parks and playgrounds and learning about the important roles of fire stations, police stations, libraries, and schools in the community. We’ll wrap up the semester with a City Showcase, where students will present their model cities.
