Science instruction will follows the Preschool/Early K Nature School schedule. We delve into various subjects including insects, flowers, camouflage in nature, owls and more taking the teaching up just a notch compared with our younger nature schoolers. Students will love our Rooted Math curriculum which includes lots of patterns, categorization, shapes and more. Fern and Arrow, our forest characters teach math skills with storytelling of their outdoor adventures. Of course both our nature lessons and our math lessons are playful, engaging, hands on and appropriate for these young learners. Lots of opportunity to explore books, expand the lessons with creative play and ample free play to practice those social skills. Our Rooted Mindset curriculum is also included in this class. Students should have independent toileting skills.

Science and math instruction dive deep into subject areas, striving toward higher order thinking skills. Students keep a science/math notebook for reference and documentation of work. Rooted Math uses storytelling with our forest kids, Fern and Arrow and natural elements to teach K/1 math concepts. Both Nature School and Rooted Math follow weekly themes along with project-based work. Our 5–7-year-old students gain practice in following directions, dissecting and matching elements of nature, guided project work and increasing their nature vocabulary. Our Rooted Mindset curriculum is also included in this class. K/1 Nature School includes a guide for meaningful homework in math, science and practical life making it easy for parents to plan, document and enrich each week’s lessons. A curated list of book suggestions (most available at the library) is provided for each study subject.
Many of our K/1 students stay for extended time, taking advantage of our Rooted Projects.
